An Ultrasound scan also known as sonogram, is a common and frequently used medical diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of internal organs and tissues. A transducer is placed on our skin which transmits sound waves into the body. The images are then created by a computer that capture and process the returning echoes from the body. Unlinke x-rays and MRIs, in ultrasound there is no use of non ionizing raditions, making it completely safe and a commonly used diagnosis procedure. Ultrasounds are usaually used for prenatal evaluation of a developing fetus, imaging of the heart, liver, and other organs, and detection of masses or growths.

There are two main catogeries of ultrasound scan:

Pregnancy ultrasound scan is usually done to known about the health of your unborn baby such as:

• Confirm that you are Pregnant.
• Check the size and position of the unborn baby.
• Check to see you are pregnant with more than one baby.
• Estimate how long you have been pregnant. This is known as gestational age.
• Check for signs of Down syndrome, which include thickening in the back of the baby’s neck.
• Check for birth defects in the brain, spinal cord, heart, or other parts of the body.
• Check the amount of amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is a clear liquid that surrounds an unborn baby during pregnancy. It protects the baby from outside injury and cold. It also helps promote lung development and bone growth.

Diagnostic ultrasound scan is done to provide a view and information about other parts of our body such as heart, lungs, liver, blood vessels, viens etc. It is done to:

• Look at a breast lump to see if it might be cancer. (The test may also be used to check for breast cancer in men, though this type of cancer is far more common in women.)
• Help find the cause of pelvic pain.
• Help find the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding.
• Help diagnose infertility or monitor infertility treatments.

Ultrasound machine is a cutting-edge, easy to use computerized technolongy that collects and projects images based on the echoes of the sound waves transmitted into the body during an ultrasound scan procedure.
