Nowadays, the role of PET scans in cardiology and neurology is also at the forefront, alongside the use of PET scans for various clinical trials.

What are the Types of PET CT Scans?

There are several types of PET CT scans depending on the use of the scan.

  1. Oncology PET CT scan: uses FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) to detect cells that use up glucose very fast, like cancer cells. The FFG PET CT also helps to detect the tumors and their spread.
  2. Cardiac PET scan: detects blood flow to the heart and assesses heart functioning.
  3. Neurological PET CT uses FDG to diagnose mental disorders like Alzheimer’s and epilepsy to detect any area of abnormal brain function.
  4. Infections that may be located in certain specific parts of the body that cannot be visualized on normal scans as infection sites are metabolically active.
  5. PET CT for monitoring the progress of treatment of cancers.
  6. Pediatric PET CT, which uses FDG at pediatric doses to check for infections, neurological conditions, and cancers in kids.
