What Is a PET CT Scan?

A PET CT scan combines two types of imaging: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT).

The CT scan creates detailed images of your organs, bones, and tissues. The PET scan shows how these areas are functioning at the cellular level. It uses a small amount of radioactive tracer, usually FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose), given through an injection before the scan.

Some cells, including many cancer cells, use more glucose than normal cells. They therefore absorb more FDG and may appear as areas of increased activity on the PET images. By combining PET and CT images, doctors can see both the structure of an area and how it is behaving.

Why Doctors Recommend a PET CT Scan

Your doctor may recommend a PET CT scan to:

  • Detect cancer: Identify suspicious areas and help determine whether they may be cancerous.
  • Stage cancer: Check whether cancer has spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body.
  • Monitor treatment: Assess how cancer is responding to chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy.
  • Detect recurrence: Look for signs that cancer has returned after treatment.
  • Evaluate neurological conditions: Assess conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Assess heart health: Evaluate blood flow and identify damaged or non-functioning heart tissue.
  • Evaluate lymphoma and leukaemia: Help assess cancers affecting the lymph nodes and bone marrow.
  • Investigate unexplained fever: Help identify hidden infection, inflammation, or tumours when the cause of persistent fever is unclear.

How to Prepare for Your PET CT Scan

Following the preparation instructions carefully helps ensure good-quality images.
Fasting: You will usually need to fast for 4 to 6 hours before the scan. Plain water is generally allowed. Fasting helps keep blood glucose levels within the required range for the FDG tracer to work effectively.
Your blood sugar will usually be checked before the scan. If it is too high, the scan may need to be postponed.
Avoid Strenuous Activity: Avoid intense exercise for at least 24 hours before the scan. Exercise can increase glucose uptake in your muscles and affect the PET images. Light activity, such as a gentle walk, is generally fine.
If You Have Diabetes: Tell your doctor and the scanning centre in advance if you have diabetes. You may receive specific instructions about fasting, insulin, or other medications.
Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal items where possible. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. It is best to leave jewellery at home.
Medications: You can usually continue your regular medicines with a small amount of water, but follow the instructions given by your doctor or scanning centre. Inform them about all medicines and supplements you take.
Stay Hydrated: Drink enough water as advised by the centre. Staying hydrated can help the tracer move through your body and leave it through urine after the scan.

What to Expect on the Day of the Scan

A PET CT scan usually involves the following steps:

  1. Registration: You will provide your referral, ID, medical history, and medication details.
  2. Blood glucose check: Your blood sugar will be checked before the scan.
  3. Tracer injection: The radiotracer is given through an IV. The injection usually causes little discomfort.
  4. Waiting period: You will rest quietly for around 45–60 minutes while the tracer spreads through your body.
  5. Scanning: You will lie on the scanner table while it moves through the PET CT machine. The scan usually takes around 20–40 minutes.
  6. After the scan: The IV is removed. You can generally eat, drink, and return to normal activities. Drinking plenty of water is usually encouraged.

The complete visit can take around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, including preparation and the tracer uptake period.

Understanding Your PET CT Scan Report

PET CT reports are usually available within 24 to 48 hours, although this can vary between centres.

Some common terms include:

  • SUV (Standardised Uptake Value): Indicates how much tracer a particular tissue has absorbed. Doctors interpret SUV along with other findings.
  • Hypermetabolic lesion: An area showing higher-than-expected tracer uptake. This can occur with cancer, infection, or inflammation.
  • FDG-avid: An area that actively takes up FDG tracer.
  • No abnormal FDG uptake: Generally means no suspicious areas of increased FDG uptake were identified.

Avoid interpreting the report on your own. Your doctor will consider the PET CT findings alongside your symptoms, medical history, blood tests, and other scans.

Is a PET CT Scan Safe?

PET CT involves radiation, but the dose is carefully controlled for diagnostic purposes. The radioactive tracer used in an FDG PET CT is gradually eliminated from the body, mainly through the kidneys and urine.

Serious reactions to the tracer are uncommon. Tell the medical team if you have previously experienced a reaction to a radiotracer or contrast agent. Repeated scans should be discussed with your doctor, who can weigh the benefits against cumulative radiation exposure.

Special Considerations during PET CT Scan

  • Pregnancy: PET CT is generally avoided during pregnancy because of radiation exposure to the foetus. Tell your doctor if you could be pregnant.
  • Breastfeeding: You may be advised to temporarily stop breastfeeding after the scan. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor or scanning centre.
  • Claustrophobia: PET CT scanners are generally more open than MRI machines. If you are very anxious about the scan, inform the centre beforehand so suitable arrangements can be discussed.

Expert videos About PET CT Scan

People alaso ask about Pet Ct Scan

The Scan usually takes only 20–40 minutes; you’ll need extra time beforehand for preparation and to allow the tracer to circulate through your body.

Usually, no. You will generally need to fast for 4–6 hours before the scan. Plain water is typically allowed. Follow the specific instructions provided by your centre.

The injection is similar to a standard IV injection and usually causes little discomfort. Some people may notice a brief cool sensation as the tracer enters the vein.

Most centres provide PET CT reports within 24–48 hours, although the exact turnaround time varies. Some centres may offer faster reporting at an additional cost.

In most cases, yes. The tracer itself does not usually affect your ability to drive. If you were given a sedative, however, you should arrange for someone else to drive you.

Bring your doctor’s referral or prescription, photo ID, previous imaging reports, a list of your current medicines, and your insurance or TPA documents if applicable. Comfortable clothing is also recommended.

Yes. Children can have a PET CT scan when needed, including for certain childhood cancers. The radiation dose is adjusted based on the child’s size and medical needs.

A PET scan shows how tissues are functioning, while a CT scan provides detailed images of their structure. A PET CT combines both, helping doctors see where an abnormality is and how it is behaving.

PET CT scanners are generally wider and shorter than MRI scanners, and most people tolerate them well. If you are concerned about claustrophobia, tell the centre in advance so they can discuss your options.
