What is a pet scan?

A PET scan is a type of medical test that helps doctors see how well different parts of your body are working. It uses a special radioactive tracer that shows up on pictures taken by a scanner. PET scans are used to find diseases like cancer and to check how the organs are functioning. A PET scan measures important body functions, such as metabolism. It helps doctors evaluate how well organs and tissues are functioning. CT imaging uses special x-ray equipment, and in some cases a contrast material, to produce multiple images of the inside of the body. A radiologist views and interprets these images on a computer monitor. CT imaging provides excellent anatomic information

When would I need a PET scan?

A PET scan can measure vital functions, such as blood flow, oxygen use and blood sugar (glucose) metabolism. It can also identify organs and tissues that aren’t working as they should. If your healthcare provider suspects you may have cancer, they’ll  recommend a PET scan, which can detect cancer and/or make a diagnosis.

  • Determine whether the cancer has spread in your body (metastasized).
  • Assess the effectiveness of treatment.
  • Determine if the cancer has returned after treatment (recurred).
  • Evaluate the prognosis (outlook) of the cancer.
  • If you’re having heart issues, your provider may recommend a PET scan to:
  • Determine the effects of a heart attack on areas of your heart.
  • Identify areas of the heart muscle that would benefit from angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery.
  • If you’re experiencing neurological symptoms, your provider may recommend a PET scan to evaluate possible brain abnormalities, such as tumors, seizures and other central nervous system conditions.

How does PET CT Scan work?

The PET scanner tracks the position of the tracers inside body revealing organs function in three dimensions. The radioactivity is produced using a device called Cyclotron. It smashes high speed particles into ordinary atoms transforming them into new, radioactive atoms. Each molecule is customised to a specific function in the body and shows doctors which part of body that functioning happening. The right level of radioactivity is measured out then it’s injected into bloodstream. Now reaction is taking place the radioactive atom on the tracer loses its radioactivity giving off a subatomic particle called a positron. Different tracers can detect cancer test, heart function and even track Alzheimer’s.
